Waste Management: An Overlooked Driver of Climate Change

Lusaka’s population produces about 1,500 tons of waste per day, with less than 50% collected and properly disposed — contributing to climate change through methane emissions from landfills. (Source: Lusaka City Council)

Green Peace Corp

The Green Peace Corp is an EcoStewards for Health Initiative (ESHI) program designed to nurture a network of dedicated environmental volunteers committed to promoting sustainability and climate action at the grassroots level. This project recruits and trains passionate individuals — from students to community members — equipping them with knowledge and practical skills in conservation, waste management, tree planting, climate advocacy, and environmental health promotion. Members of the Green Peace Corp serve as ambassadors for change, leading local eco-projects, campaigns, and clean-up efforts that inspire community-driven solutions for a healthier and greener planet. Through unity, leadership, and action, the Green Peace Corp helps strengthen the collective response to climate challenges, one community at a time.

Waste Management and Recycling

ESHI, we recognizes that proper waste management is key to protecting both human health and the environment. Our Waste Management and Recycling Project focuses on reducing pollution by promoting responsible waste disposal, recycling plastic waste, and turning organic waste into nutrient-rich compost.Through this project, we empower communities, schools, and local organizations to adopt eco-friendly waste practices. We raise awareness on the dangers of improper waste disposal, provide training on waste segregation, and encourage the creative reuse of recyclable materials. Additionally, we promote composting as a sustainable way to reduce organic waste while enriching soil for urban gardening and agriculture. This initiative not only helps lower greenhouse gas emissions but also transforms waste into valuable resources — contributing to a cleaner environment and a circular economy.

Walk for Climate

Walk for Climate is an annual flagship event organized by EcoStewards for Health Initiative (ESHI) every November, designed to raise awareness and inspire action on climate change. This community-centered walk brings together students, environmentalists, health advocates, local leaders, and citizens to unite their voices in support of a healthier planet. The walk is more than just a march — it’s a platform for environmental education, dialogue, and advocacy. Participants engage in climate-themed activities, share knowledge on sustainable living, and promote practical solutions for reducing environmental harm. Through this initiative, ESHI encourages collective responsibility and empowers communities to take meaningful action against climate change. Every step we take is a step toward a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable future.

Clean Water and Sanitation Project

At EcoStewards for Health Initiative (ESHI), we believe that access to clean water and proper sanitation is a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of public health. Our Clean Water and Sanitation Project is dedicated to promoting safe water practices, improving sanitation facilities, and raising community awareness on hygiene and water conservation. Through this project, we engage in community outreach, education, and advocacy to reduce waterborne diseases, prevent contamination, and encourage sustainable water management. We work closely with schools, households, and local authorities to support clean water access, promote proper waste disposal, and foster behavior change for healthier, more resilient communities. Together, we aim to create a world where everyone enjoys safe drinking water, clean environments, and dignified sanitation.

Environmental Health Clubs for Schools

As part of our commitment to nurturing young environmental leaders, EcoStewards for Health Initiative (ESHI) runs the Environmental Health Clubs Program in secondary schools. This project empowers students to become active participants in safeguarding both their health and the environment. Through interactive sessions, hands-on activities, and community-driven projects, students learn about critical issues such as climate change, waste management, hygiene, sustainable living, and environmental conservation. The clubs aim to inspire responsible behavior, foster leadership, and promote environmental stewardship both within schools and the surrounding communities. By shaping eco-conscious mindsets at an early age, we are helping build a generation that will advocate for and implement solutions to today’s pressing environmental health challenges.

Eco-Entrepreneurship Training

At EcoStewards for Health Initiative (ESHI), we believe that sustainable solutions must go hand in hand with economic empowerment. Our Eco-Entrepreneurship Training program is designed to equip individuals — especially youth and community members — with the knowledge and skills to develop green businesses and eco-friendly income-generating projects. This training focuses on turning environmental challenges into business opportunities by promoting innovative practices in areas such as recycling, upcycling, organic farming, composting, clean energy solutions, eco-friendly products, and green service delivery. Participants learn about sustainable business models, environmental ethics, marketing, and how entrepreneurship can drive both local development and global climate action. Through this initiative, ESHI fosters a new generation of environmentally conscious entrepreneurs who are committed to building resilient economies while protecting the planet.
